So…I was flying to Canada for a corporate gig. From the moment I woke up, everything I touched turned to disaster; but the deodorant stains on my shirt and my burnt toast seemed like “small potatoes” after the nice smiley-American-Airlines-lady asked me for my passport. Immediately, my heart sank as I realized…I didn’t have it. I missed my flight. As I made the hour-long drive-of-shame back to my apartment, I transferred my ticket to the last possible flight that would get me to Canada on time. But no…all wasn’t solved. After tearing my bedroom apart in search of the illusive passport, I called my mom and my worst fear was confirmed; it was 12 hrs away at my parents house in AZ. So my sister jumped on a plane to bring it to me.

Right when I arrived back at the airport, something prompted me to double check the equipment in my bag. I had repacked my bag when I went back to my apartment and I had forgotten to put my wireless pickup pack back in. I couldn’t believe it! At this point I was feeling beyond stupid. I Called my roommate, who was an angel about the whole affair and jumped into her car to bring me my wireless pack. No biggie…just a 45 min drive for her :/

I was trying not to panic, so I bought some pretzels and sat down to take some deep breaths. I had only eaten one pretzel when I accidentally spilled the bag all over the floor. The nice man next to me helped me pick them up and throw them away. Then I called my mom, and through tears explained that I had just spilled all my pretzels! At first she was confused lol until I told her the previous chain of events.

So there I sat, with no pretzels, helplessly praying that my roommate and sister would arrive in time. I started having flashbacks to my track days…it seriously felt like I was waiting for the baton in a relay race. As soon as my sister Jennifer got off her plane, we made the passport handoff, I checked in, ran outside wait for the arrival of my roommate, and with the remaining 20 minutes I went through security and hustled to my flight.

As I ran to the plane, a nice man chased me down to hand me my shirt which had fallen out of my bag, and upon exiting the plane, the young missionary sitting next to me reminded me not to forget my lap top which I had completely forgotten about under the seat in front of me (thank you both!)  Once I arrived in Toronto with my equipment, I didn’t even care that my flight was an hour late and that my car service forgot me; at least I had made it!

I am usually a pretty sound, responsible human being, but I was an absolute wreck this entire day. I think so many things had gone wrong and I was so disgusted with myself that my brain literally shut down and just stopped trying. By the time I finally got to my hotel I only had 4 hrs to sleep, but none the less, I read my scriptures, said my prayers and I went to sleep. I put that day behind me and I promised myself that the next day WOULD be better.

I guess the moral of this story is this: We all have negative days,but that doesn’t mean we are pessimistic. We all do stupid things, but that doesn’t mean we are stupid. It’s important to be able to distinguish between what happens to us and who we are, and look forward with hope for new and better days ahead!

So my band…my band.  I’ve posted videos of them online, I rock-out with them on stage every day…but I’ve never stated how much I love these guys.  I think it’s fair to say that in terms of both musicality and personality, I couldn’t have picked better band members. Ironically, I didn’t even really pick them.

Several months ago, I needed a band for a show. The show was kindof an experiment…to see if a band was a “good move.”  These two random guys (Drew and Gavi), were recommended to me and I took a leap of faith.  I flew them to NYC, we rehearsed for two days, and then we performed a show at Webster Hall.

The show went amazingly well, so several months later when it came time to put together the tour, who did we call?  Drew and Gavi!  I honestly didn’t know them very well (considering that I had only spent three days total with them), so I hoped that they were as kind-hearted and respectful as I thought they were, and that I would be able to connect with them..
Well…I lucked out on both accounts. For example, on the first day of our tour, Gavi jumped on the bus with his coffee and sat down next to me. “Oh, man, I love my coffee…” he beamed.  Suddenly his eyes widened, he turned his head to look at me, and said in a worried voice, “Oh dear…can I drink this in front of you?  I’m sorry….” (I don’t drink coffee.)  I laughed and told him that “of course,” he could drink it.  Needless to say, both Drew and Gavi have been extremely respectful of me and my standards.
As far as my concern regarding a connection with my band…omg, we have so much fun together!  They are constantly making me laugh and they “got my back” if I need them.  :)
We even have this joke where I call them “my girls.”  Whenever i say that, Drew and Gavi immediately turn into “Becky” and “Saundra,” and they start talking in their “valley girl” voices.  It gets me every time…I just die laughing!

Everyone keeps asking me if I’m excited to have a break from touring, but honestly…the elements of meeting fans and performing, combined with the privilege of hanging out with Drew and Gavi all the time…heck, I want to stay on the road for the next year!  It’s also been great to have my friend Mckay touring with us as the opening act, and it’s been so awesome to have one of my bff’s Whitney as the merchandise manager on the road.  We are one giant family!  I feel like only fate could have brought us all together because we are such a motly crew, but man, I love these people!

When my parents and I arrived in Italy, we were greeted at the airport by Rio, our driver, who took us to the festival site located in the woods of Courmyure.  It was there that I first met the festival staff.

From the moment I got out of the car, there was a special feeling in the air. Everyone was eagerly working to prepare for the following day, and yet no one seemed stressed.  It was quite the oposite; everyone appeared to be so happy!  Everyone was wearing interesting combinations of clothing: plaid pajama pants with patterned shirts, sweaters, and most of them wore an array of colors that I couldn’t normally imagine wearing side by side; however, here in the woods, it almost seemed to compliment the free-feeling gypsy vibe.

As I walked, observing the scenery, it seemed a bit odd to me that people’s faces would “light up” as I passed. They would came up to me and nervously introduced themselves, saying how happy they were that I was there.

“Oh… I’m happy to be here too.” I’d reply. I wasn’t sure why they were so excited, but I was extremely flattered.

It became more and more apparent that people knew who I was.  As I walked through the camp, people would do a “double-take,” then nudge their friends and point in my direction. People were constantly running up to me, asking politely to, “Make a photo,” with them or to give them an autograph. It made me feel like a celebrity lol!  There were several instances when I walked by a group of girls and they literally began to jump up and down and squeal with excitement. It felt so unreal…”Why are these people so excited to see me?” I asked myself.  ”I’m just a ‘YouTuber….’”

After we met the staff, Rio drove us back to the city. As we passed through the town, we saw posters for the festival posted everywhere. To my astonishment, they were GIANT posters… of… me?  I pulled out the festival brochure they had given me, and sure enough…I was on the cover. I decided that either all the other artists in the festival had faces like Quasi Modo that were unsuited for publicity…or I was the main event.

‘No,’ I thought…’There are tons of bands…there is NO WAY I am the headliner.’

However, the next morning I spoke to the event coordinator…and sure enough, my theory was confirmed.

“Si, I found you on youtube,” he said, “and you were the first artist we hire for this event. Then we planed the whole thing around you.”

WOW…I had assumed that I was just one of many openers for this festival, and yet…I was supposed to be the star of the show?  It was the weirdest feeling, and as much as I tried, I just couldn’t force the reality of it to sink in!

The next morning, festivities began. The woods were now much more crowded with campers prepared to participate in the festivities. Some were wearing the same random mixed-matched clothing I’d witnessed

earlier, while others were historical re-enactors garbed in traditional Celtic wear. (All I knew is that I

REALLY wanted a pair of those “Aladin” pants that everyone was wearing!  (I eventually found some.))  There were now thousands of people, and yet I could feel that same special, peaceful feeling floating through the air. The air not only felt fresh and clean, but there was a contagious aura of positivity that was almost tangible. Are Italians always this happy?

Later I met fans who had come from as far as Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, Holland, Southern Italy and even London…just to see little ol’ me?  I couldn’t believe how devoted and excited they were, and it made me that much more excited to give them an amazing performance.  Let me just say that “good vibes” can work wonders for the violin!

When it was finally time to return to the United States, I didn’t want to leave!  I met some of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met in my life and made some amazing friends.  I left feeling very humbled, and honored to have shared my time in Italy with some of the most amazing people I have ever met.  Thank you to all of my fans in Italy who made my first trip to your country so amazing!  I will see you again soon!
